Edilmari Longo Vega, Ministry Lead at Colegio San José, sends us this update about the school’s ecological initiatives, which align with the Marianist Encounters goals.
As part of our plan to introduce a green service activity for each grade as part of their annual service requirements, this semester we have done the following activities:
February 1: Our 8th graders (Class of 2029) partnered with the nonprofit organization Para la Naturaleza to maintain the plant nursery at the Botanical Garden of the University of Puerto Rico. Their work included harvesting turmeric, planting seeds, and caring for trees. This experience taught them about Puerto Rico’s endemic trees while fostering collaboration skills.
February 8: Our 10th graders (Class of 2027) volunteered at the communal garden of the DC community, an underserved neighborhood in Río Piedras. This initiative was made possible through our collaboration with Centro de Acción Urbana, Comunitaria y Empresarial (CAUCE) of Río Piedras.
March 8: Members of the National Honor Society, the Recycling Club, and the Environmental Committee of Eco-School joined forces with the nonprofit 7 Quillas to clean the beach at Ocean Park.
Additionally, our school newspaper's latest edition of La Lanza features several environmental topics. Students explore Puerto Rico’s energy crisis and the impact of the California wildfires. This edition also highlights the achievements of the Eco-School Club, which earned the Green Flag, an international award recognizing school sustainability.

Follow-Up on Plans for the School Year
Tutoring Program Collaboration: We have partnered with the Municipality of San Juan through Centro de Acción Urbana, Comunitaria y Empresarial (CAUCE) of Río Piedras. Our collaboration began with the communal garden, and we are now coordinating efforts for our students to provide tutoring services.
Reusable Bottle Initiative: We are still working on finalizing the proposal.
Employee Ecological Activity: We have proposed an annual ecological activity for our employees. Prof. José Balseiro, director of MIT, is coordinating the event, which is scheduled for the end of the semester.
Thanks for this update! I'm happy to see so much activity. I hope the boys enjoy the projects as well!👍
Dear Edilmari and students, thanks very much for all your work to care for you part of the planet! I'm impressed! Please keep up the great work!
