Laura Koonce, Vice President for Mission and HR and Ministry Lead of Marianist Encounters at Saint Louis School, HI, sent us this update written by the school's Japanese teacher, Sensei Mimi Aquino.
On October 22, students from the Japanese class and Japanese club participated in "Japan Day," organized by the Japan-America Society of Japan. The students had the opportunity to experience various aspects of traditional Japanese culture, including ikebana, tea ceremony, calligraphy, karate, kimono, soroban (abacus), hanafuda (flower cards), bon odori (traditional dance), and trying on yukata. The students were fascinated and excited as they engaged with aspects of Japanese culture that they don’t often encounter. Through this cultural learning experience, I hope that the students will develop a greater interest in studying Japanese and become a bridge between Hawaii and Japan in the future. Our Japanese class and club intend to continue participating in various cultural events and hosting events to introduce Japan in order to deepen the ties between Japan and Hawaii.
