At the University of Dayton, waste heat is now being converted into carbon-free electricity for the campus in a first-of-its-kind initiative.
Through a landmark 15-year partnership with AES Ohio, Tallgrass, and Kanin Energy, the University of Dayton (UD) is now fulfilling 100% of its campus electricity needs with carbon-free power generated from industrial waste heat. Completed in early 2026, this first-of-its-kind initiative captures otherwise wasted thermal energy from a natural gas compressor station in Ohio and converts it into clean electricity delivered exclusively to UD. Expected to generate 78,000 megawatt-hours of power annually and abate 55,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year, the project reduces the University of Dayton’s overall carbon footprint by 71%. Ultimately, the collaboration not only advances UD's Marianist mission of environmental stewardship, but also serves as a scalable, innovative model for industrial decarbonization across other energy-intensive sectors.
