FamilyOnline - October issue featured two articles on Marianist Education, among other stories. The first article shares two personal stories about an inclusive Catholic and Marianist Education for children with special needs at our Marianist schools, and the second article highlights the new nursing program at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.

St. Mary’s South Side and Our Lady of Pillar School are part of the One Classroom initiative. This initiative is part of a network of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, which provides a learning space and classroom for children with intellectual and developmental delays to attain a Catholic education. Inspired by the Fire Foundation in Kansas City, One Classroom was founded by the Armitage family, LeeAnn and Tony, to support children with special education needs. Under this program, Chris Armitage and Elizabeth Barnes study at St. Mary’s South Side and Our Lady of Pillar school, respectively. Both Chris and Elizabeth, along with other children with similar needs, are part of Catholic and Marianist communities where each one is accepted with love and respect, becoming part of the larger community that fosters inclusion, empathy, and compassion. Under the One Classroom initiative, both Chris and Elizabeth are glad and excited to be part of these loving and supportive communities.

One Classroom offers guidance and consultation to those interested in pursuing similar initiatives in their communities. It also provides resources for families, clergy, and educators.
