To answer the call for ecological responsibility outlined in Laudato Si', the Marianist Community at Hollywood, FL, has implemented a series of practical, eco-friendly changes in daily lifestyle, home infrastructure, and financial practices to actively demonstrate the community's commitment to environmental stewardship and the common good.
Inspired by Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’, which calls all people to care for our Common home through ecological responsibility, community solidarity, and sustainable living, the Hollywood Marianist Community has taken meaningful steps to embody this vision. These actions reflect a growing awareness that environmental stewardship is not merely a technical task, but a moral and spiritual responsibility rooted in respect for creation and concern for future generations.
The following highlights some key accomplishments that demonstrate our commitment to integral ecology and the practical application of Laudato Si’ in our daily life in the community.
1. Adoption of Cloth Bags for Shopping
In alignment with the call of Laudato Si’ to reduce waste and resist the “throwaway culture,” the transition to reusable cloth bags represents a simple yet powerful shift in daily habits. If we do get a plastic bag, we recycle it at the supermarket.
2. Use of Recycled Paper Plates
The community has chosen to use recycled paper products, reflecting a conscious effort to minimize environmental impact and support circular economies. This practice demonstrates a preference for products that respect both ecological limits and responsible production.
3. Installation of Energy-Efficient Light Bulbs
For many years, we have used energy-efficient light bulbs as needed. However, this year, we installed all lighting fixtures with energy-efficient bulbs, reducing electricity consumption, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting a culture of conservation.
4. Installation of Energy Efficient Windows
This year, the community, with financial assistance from the Province, replaced all windows and doors with energy-efficient windows. These specific installations reduce energy loss, improve insulation, and decrease the overall environmental footprint of our buildings.
5. Air Duct Cleaning, Decontaminating & Replacement of Damaged Ducts
Another capital improvement we completed this year was the assessment of our HVAC system air ducts. After the inspection, we committed to cleaning and decontaminating the extensive air ducts in the community. We also replaced damaged ducts. The process included High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filtration, the Negative Air Pressure Method, and sanitizing and deodorizing the system with a High-Grade Disinfectant. This improvement to our Air Conditioning system reduces energy consumption, reduces stress on the Air Conditioning units, and produces more clean air in the house.
6. Conversion from chlorine pool to salt chlorination.
Converting from our traditional chlorine pool to a saltwater system reflects not only a practical improvement in comfort and maintenance but also a meaningful step toward the ecological responsibility encouraged in Laudato Si’. Saltwater pools reduce the need for harsh chemical storage and handling, lowering the environmental impact associated with chlorine products, minimizing chemical waste, and supporting a healthier, more sustainable home environment.
7. Continued Commitment to Recycling in Accordance with City of Hollywood Guidelines
The Marianist Hollywood Community continues to adhere to local recycling guidelines.
environment.
8. Transition from a National Bank to a Community Bank
This action step reflects the broader vision of Laudato Si’ of an economy rooted in solidarity, local empowerment, equality, diversity, and ethical responsibility. By supporting a community bank, we contribute to local economic resilience, strengthen community ties, and encourage financial practices that prioritize people and the environment over profit alone. This decision embodies the encyclical call for economic structures that serve the common good.
Conclusion
These accomplishments represent small but meaningful steps toward ecological conversion and toward creating a more sustainable, compassionate community. While each action may seem modest on its own, together they form a powerful witness to the values of Laudato Si’: care for creation, solidarity with the vulnerable, and a commitment to the common good.
