Fr. James Heft, SM, was presented with the Marianist Award by the University of Dayton (UD) on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025. The Marianist Award is presented annually to a Roman Catholic whose work has made a significant contribution to intellectual life.

Jim spent many years at UD, serving as chair of the Religious Studies Department for six years, Provost of the university for eight years, and Chancellor for 10 years. He left UD in 2006 to found the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where he served as the Alton Brooks Professor of Religion and the Founder and President Emeritus of the Institute. During his time as president, the Institute published 20 books. Since his return to UD in the summer of 2023, Jim has served as a scholar-in-residence, devoting his time to writing, teaching, and mentoring faculty and students.
