Marianist Family Retreat Center community members worked to plant trees and shrubs on the sand dunes along the coastline of Cape May Point, New Jersey. Sand dune erosion along Cape May Point is a significant and ongoing issue, primarily driven by coastal storms like Nor'easters and hurricanes, wave action, and sea-level rise. Some of the key effects of sand dune erosion are the loss of coastal protection to act as a natural barrier against storm surge and coastal flooding, and the loss of a vital habitat for various wildlife along the coastlines.
Mary’s House continues to take action in caring for creation. Together, Jessica Sherwen, MFRC Program Director, and her son Billy, along with the Brothers Richard, Stan, and Esteban, worked with their neighbors to reforest the dunes by planting trees and shrubs. This effort responds to Pope Francis’ call in his encyclical Laudato Si’ to care for our common home. Lay people and religious came together for the same cause, working as one family. Their united work aims to protect the environment and prevent erosion, showing once again that small acts of care can make a big difference.
Here is a video highlighting this initiative.
