Bergamo Center, Dayton, OH, is committed to Laudato Si initiatives, such as adopting sustainable practices for all its retreats and programs.
In collaboration with the rest of the Mount Saint John campus, the Bergamo Center takes seriously its commitment to caring for the local and global environment. Since 2023, Mount Saint John has had 1,900 solar panels on its campus, which means that nearly 100% of the electrical energy used on the property has been solar! The best way for the vegetation around the solar panels to be kept in check is through flocks of sheep that are brought in, which adds a fun element to the campus.
Additionally, Bergamo's dining services partner, W.g. Grinders, purchases many of its vegetables from 80-Acres Farm and thus provides Bergamo guests with local, pesticide-free produce. The coffee served at Bergamo is certified by the Rainforest Alliance, which prioritizes sustainability and supporting local communities. Bergamo also uses non-disposable dishes and glassware for meals, and staff members offer guests water pitchers as an alternative to using bottled water. As a Catholic organization, Bergamo feels a responsibility to be a good “steward of creation,” and preserve the campus and the planet’s natural beauty for generations to come.
