Bro. Jack Ventura, SM, Ministry Lead for MFEP and Director of Mission Integration with Ms. Jennifer Love-Gironda at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory, Hollywood, FL, sends us this update.
In the Laudato Si’ Action Platform, Number 3 - Foster Ecological Economics and Number 4 – Sustainable Lifestyle, Jennifer Love-Gironda, a faculty member in the Fine & Performing Art Department, developed a unique understanding of these platform goals for her art students. Rather than recycle old newspapers or discard scraps of fabric, she instructed her students in the Fashion Club to manufacture dresses and gowns made from these materials. When asked why and how this project touches upon Laudato Si’, she said, “This project is important to supporting Sustainable Lifestyles and Ecological Economics because it teaches students to come up with creative solutions to combat rampant consumerism and & 'fast fashion' filling our landfills." Members of the Fashion Club featured their masterpieces at our second annual Rhythm and Visions Show. This special evening event is a showcase of art, dance, and music. The showcase features a student art show, solo and group musical performances, and performances from our competition dance team. The student featured in the photo below is Sofia Gomez.
Dear Jack and Jennifer, that project, I am sure, made the students and others much more aware of how important it is to get out of the consumerism trap. Thanks very much!
A great example of thinking outside the traditional sustainable categories! Thanks for sharing!
