Twelfth-grade Social Justice students from Chaminade College Preparatory High School, CA, read the Laudato Si’ encyclical and created posters with quotes from the encyclical for three proposals: Team Sea, Save the Bees, and Solar Energy.
I have my 12th-grade Social Justice students interact with Laudato Si, the encyclical, after watching a video about Saint Francis and his beautiful writings about how we are to care for creation. The groups interact with Laudato Si’ and pull out quotes that they feel encapsulate the message of the encyclical.
Then, each student group prepares a presentation or a poster on an environmental issue they would want to bring to the Archdiocese for regional support, using quotes from Laudato Si to support their proposal. Then, each class votes on the best one. The three Social Justice classes I have this year voted on these three proposals: "Team Sea" (about taking care of our oceans), "Save the Bees," and "Solar Energy.”
