Read about the Marianist Technical Institute in Ukunda, Kenya, which provides vocational and technical training to youth from poor and marginalized families.

On the east coast of Kenya, just south of Mombassa, lies the city of Ukunda. Here, one may find the Marianist Technical Institute Ukunda, a non-profit vocational training institute owned and run by the Society of Mary (Marianists) under the jurisdiction of the Archdioceses of Mombasa. This mission serves youth between the ages of 16-25 who come from poor and marginalized families.

MTI-Ukunda offers technical training in seven major departments: Catering, Hairdressing, Electrical, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Plumbing, Information & Communication Technology (ICT), and Business. Currently, there is a total of two hundred & fifty students engaged in these courses! The Institute’s vision is to move youth from situations of destitution and dependency to a situation of greater dignity and economic stability. The school assists youth in finding employment in both formal and informal sectors and thus gives them the opportunity to garner respect, dignity, and resourcefulness for their own good and the good of the community they are serving.

The Marianist’s ultimate aim in this mission is to build a faith-inspired process of improving the lives of the Ukunda Community and its environs through teaching youth trade skills and business knowledge and offering counseling and spiritual guidance.
