Watch the news video below about sheep grazing on the prairie at Mount St. John Solar array on Earth Day 2025. Tara Poling, Program Coordinator at MEEC, shares this story with us.

WDTN, the NBC television affiliate in Dayton, Ohio, aired two brief stories about the herd of sheep that arrived on Earth Day (April 22) to graze the solar prairie at Mount Saint John. MSJ Facilities Director Jeff Bohrer recorded the video and was interviewed about this new initiative.

The sheep graze on the current cool-season plants, such as bittercress and brome grass, which can inhibit more desirable warm-season species, such as little bluestem grass and asters. They also make short work of woody sprouts before they become problematic. They can easily graze hard-to-reach areas and leave behind valuable fertilizer. They were MSJ for about two weeks and then moved to another site.
