Oct. 25, 2023 To: St. Mary’s University Community From: Thomas M. Mengler, President Re: Laudato Si’ Action Plan follows Pope Francis' call for sustainability

On Earth Day, April 22, 2021, Pope Francis issued a call to implement his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’. In this encyclical, Pope Francis addressed not only Catholics but all people of goodwill — the entire world community — imploring us to “care for our common home.” St. Mary’s University heard Pope Francis’ Earth Day call to action, and in Fall 2021, I signed an agreement making St. Mary’s one of the first universities in Texas to become a Laudato Si’ University. As such, St. Mary’s began what will be a seven-year journey to play our part in promoting a sustainable global home. In Fall 2022, we undertook the first major step by appointing a Laudato Si’ Action Plan Development Committee, chaired by David Turner, Ph.D., Professor of Environmental Science. This committee was charged with the task of developing recommendations for what would later become the St. Mary’s Laudato Si’ Action Plan. We are grateful to Professor Turner and his 12 colleagues of students, faculty and staff for their excellent work. The Laudato Si’ Action Plan sets forth a set of commitments — an initial strategic plan — that will enable the St. Mary’s community of students, faculty, and staff to begin to fulfill a continuing effort to help preserve our common home. These commitments incorporate many of the committee’s recommendations.
