Recycling initiatives at the University of Dayton

University of Dayton’s Hanley Sustainability Institute was awarded a grant through the Ohio EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) to standardize recycling efforts on the campus.

Through the grant, UD will be able to reduce campus waste by standardizing trash and recycling bins across its campus, along with supporting infrastructure and equipment development, including detailed signage in designated areas of recycling and waste separation. The grant proposal was developed by the Hanley Sustainability Institute HSI’s student leaders. A recycling hub system was implemented in the UD’s student residence, Marycrest, in January. HSI has a food recovery program which involves its student leaders working with UD Dining Services to package unserved food into single-use aluminum tins and transport it to UD’s food pantry – Food4Flyers. This food is then repacked into single-serve containers for students using the pantry. The funding will assist this food recovery program in transitioning to a reusable container model, thereby reducing the waste associated with single-use tins. Furthermore, HSI leaders run Campus zero-waste events and provide bins, signs, and containers for larger campus events. These events allow attendees to separate their waste into recycling, compost, and landfill categories for maximum impact.
